About This Course

The Callan Method was created in London in the 1960s, originally to help students from many countries learn to speak English in a very short time, and it is now used by language schools across dozens of countries. Its signature is a fast-paced, all-English, high-repetition, highly interactive rhythm: the tutor asks questions almost continuously at near-natural speed, leaving no gap to think in your native language, so you must answer at once in full sentences. Through repeated cycles of listening and speaking, responding in English is trained into an instinct.

The method targets the central problem of many learners — translating in the head, worrying over grammar, fearing mistakes, and consequently staying silent. A Callan lesson never uses the mother tongue; the teacher conveys meaning through lively mouth movement, gesture and context rather than translation. Every new structure follows a loop of hearing the model, repeating it, rapid question-and-answer, and deliberate revisiting in later lessons. Both research and classroom practice suggest this high-frequency repetition with instant feedback reflects the principles of spaced repetition and automaticity, sharply shortening the journey from “understanding” to speaking without thinking; students typically spend three to four times more of the lesson actually talking than in a conventional class.

Taught by tutors certified in the method, the programme runs through its 12 Stages (this course covers the core A2-to-C1 range), each layering vocabulary, grammar and tenses step by step. It especially suits three groups: weak beginners who need to be gently pushed to speak a great deal; busy professionals who want fast, efficient gains in listening and speaking; and learners bored by dry grammar who want to rebuild their feel for the language through energetic interaction. Delivered in 25-minute 1-on-1 online sessions with focused review, it turns English from knowledge you have to think about into a skill you can use the moment you open your mouth.

Why the Method Works

Evidence and principles behind the course, not just promises.

1

The Callan Method originated in London in the 1960s around fast questions, immediate answers and spaced repetition, using dense comprehensible input to make learners think directly in English.

2

Its strength lies in very high speaking time and spaced structural review — both targeting the classic “I understand but can’t speak” problem.

3

It is an intensive speaking method and works best with a tutor’s instant correction; our teachers adjust the pace to you rather than pushing speed for its own sake.
